The Ask.

During my time at Cosmic Design, I had the opportunity to concept, design, and animate promotional videos displayed on the Lantern and Blade screens of Ottawa's National Arts Centre. Above is the main animation promoting the show Come From Away, which ran in 2021.

Process

 After going over the key art and some other motion pieces that have been approved by the show, I looked into the template we were given for the Lantern and blades. I saw the opportunity to use the blades (the 4 rectangular screens in the lower right of the template) for key information and logos to allow the main animation to take up the Lantern (main area). Using the clues I was given, I started to construct a story that could flow together - a plane in brand colors flies through the main screen, pulls away, and is matched by several planes flying across the ocean, one being our main place headed to Newfoundland (where the story is set). Zoom out to a globe, Fade in the Come From Away Logo, and there it is.

In 2022, we were tasked with creating another animation, this time for Disney's Frozen stage show. This year I was less involved with the storyboarding of the project and more involved with the Motion Design. This animation was a joint project between a coworker and me. A sample of it can be seen below.

The Lion King
Summer and Fall Versions

In 2024, we were tasked with doing 2 more National Arts Centre Lantern and Blade animations – this time for Disney's The Lion King. For the summer animation, we were given some awesome videos of actors in character jumping and posing. These are the main features of the video, slowed down, with key art moving around throughout the video.

For the fall animation, I was given free rein to use key art assets to animate as I pleased.
